The Power of Nature: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Connection

Discover how nature can help you find your true self and connect with the world around you. Find inner peace and self-discovery.

As I write this, I am sitting on a patio in San Diego. I'm surrounded by lemon trees, an orange tree and lots of sun. A lawnmower runs in the distance, although there's not much grass here. Due to the lack of rain, astroturf is the lawn of choice.

If I look over the fence, I can see the Pacific Ocean. There are harbor seals, whales, dolphins, and all sorts of sea birds there. I know this not only because I know a bit about the wildlife here but also because I went on a boat tour and had the privilege of seeing them myself.

It's so otherworldly to see them live. I'm used to songbirds, squirrels, deer, and occasionally hawks or foxes. To be so close to the largest mammals on earth is awe-inspiring in the grandest sense of the word.

And, not far to the east, there are a couple of places I find fascinating: the Anza Borrego Desert and the Salton Sea.

Last week, I mentioned how much I love the desert.

Even though it seems "empty," there's a palpable, rich wildness that I've never felt anywhere else.

Have you been to the desert?
Do you know what I mean?

And the big question–did you remember your name?

Each part of our beautiful planet is totally different and unique. And each animal, plant, microbe, and fungi evolved specifically for that environment. Over the entire face of our planet, Life expresses herself in infinite and ever-changing ways.

Do you have a favorite place? Somewhere that you feel drawn to or that helps you remember your name?

I actually have many and hope you do, too. After all, Nature is waiting for us to come out and play!!

Here's a 3-minute tiny but mighty practice to help you tap into your unique, yet vast, location:

  • Step outside. Let yourself center and relax. Drop any worries or tension - just for these few minutes. You can always pick them back up later - if you still want them.

  • Come to your senses. What do you see, smell, feel? Focus on the bottoms of your feet, imagining that you have roots that can reach into the Earth.

  • From your simple spot, you are connected to the entire planet, with all its Life and diversity. And yet, where you are is unique, and you are adding your energy to co-create that uniqueness.

  • Bask in it!

The Science Behind Nature's Healing Power

For centuries, humans have intuitively understood the healing power of nature. From the calming effects of a forest walk to the rejuvenating properties of a beach vacation, nature has a profound impact on our mental and physical well-being.

But what does the science say? Research has shown that spending time in nature can have a range of benefits, including:

  • Reduced stress levels: Studies have found that exposure to natural environments can lower cortisol levels, blood pressure, and other markers of stress.

  • Improved mood: Nature has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Boosted immune system: Spending time in nature has been found to increase the production of natural killer cells, which play a key role in fighting off infection and disease.

  • Improved cognitive function: Exposure to nature has been shown to improve memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

These benefits are thought to be due to a range of factors, including:

  • Exposure to natural light: Natural light exposure can regulate our circadian rhythms, improve our mood, and boost our energy levels.

  • Connection with nature's rhythms: Spending time in nature can help us connect with the natural world's rhythms, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.

  • Reduced exposure to pollution: Nature provides a respite from the pollution and toxins of urban environments, promoting cleaner air, water, and soil.

How to Use Nature for Self-Discovery

Nature has long been a source of inspiration and guidance for those seeking self-discovery. Here are some ways to tap into nature's wisdom:

  • Spend time in solitude: Take time to sit in silence, surrounded by nature. Allow yourself to settle into the present moment and see what insights arise.

  • Pay attention to your senses: Notice the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures of the natural world. Allow yourself to fully immerse in the experience.

  • Use nature as a mirror: Reflect on your experiences in nature and see what they might be teaching you about yourself. Are there patterns or themes that emerge?

  • Practice nature journaling: Write, draw, or paint about your experiences in nature. This can help you process your insights and reflect on your journey.

  • Take a nature-based retreat: Consider taking a retreat or workshop that focuses on nature-based self-discovery. This can provide a supportive environment for deepening your connection with nature and yourself.
