Finding Peace in the Present: A New Year's Reflection Inspired by Nature

Embrace the new year with hope and positivity. Learn how Nature can guide you towards a more peaceful and hopeful new year.
If you live in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic, you likely had spectacular and unusual weather on New Year's Eve. We had thunderstorms, complete with torrential rain, wind and lightning.
Then, in a flash, the sun came out and lit up the valley just at sunset. We had a rainbow! My picture (below) only shows a small portion of it due to the deep angle of the sun and the side of the mountain.
But my Facebook feed was flooded with photos of full and double rainbows up and down the East Coast.
Many saw it as a sign of good things to come. Did you?
We’re a few days into the new year and, be honest, do you wish you had a crystal ball?
So many predictions are being made. We’re looking for signs and, yes, please give them in large print in the sky; thank you.
There’s a lot of catastrophizing and planning for the worst.
Whatever that might be.
Our brains are wired to scan for trouble, and I find it easy to get caught up in futurizing and worrying – mostly about things that I have absolutely no control over.
While Nature is part of the problem – hey, brain, no tigers to run away from around here! – it’s also part of the solution.
Taking time to center, to be in Nature, to let it heal and balance you, can bring you back to the present moment, where all the answers reside.
Here’s a 3-minute tiny but mighty practice to keep you cool and calm:
🌿Step outdoors. Take a moment to bring all your senses into the present time: what do you see, what do you hear, what do you feel on your skin, how does the Earth feel beneath you?
🌿Breathe, sensing the air move inside and then out. Let worries drop like old, worn-out baggage. Breathe some more.
🌿There, don’t you feel better already? Know this is your truth. You are a whole, sovereign being, and when you allow yourself the space to listen inside, you’ve been there all along.
My NYE? I stayed up for midnight (miracle!), and we were watching for the ball to drop at Times Square. At 11:59:15, literally 45 seconds before midnight, our whole house went dark. It was a power outage.
It came right back on but took too long to reboot for us to watch the ball drop. If it weren’t for all the gunfire and fireworks, we might not have known.
If I’m looking for a sign, I’d say that things might get dark, but not for long. And if I don’t watch the news, I’ll somehow find out everything I need to know.
Embracing the Unknown: Tips for Staying Calm and Focused in the New Year
As we step into the new year, it's natural to feel a sense of uncertainty and unpredictability. But what if we could approach the unknown with curiosity and openness rather than fear and anxiety?
Here are some tips for staying calm and focused in the new year:
Practice mindfulness: Take a few minutes daily to breathe, focus on the present moment, and let go of worries about the future.
Connect with nature: Spend time outdoors, appreciate the beauty of the natural world, and allow yourself to feel grounded and centered.
Listen to your intuition: Trust your inner wisdom and pay attention to your instincts. They can guide you toward making decisions that align with your values and goals.
Focus on what you can control: Rather than worrying about things outside your control, focus on what you can control and take action toward creating positive change.
Practice self-care: Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Make time for activities that nourish and recharge you.
By embracing these tips, you can cultivate a sense of calm and focus in the new year, even in the face of uncertainty and unpredictability. Remember, the present moment is all we have, and it's where we find the power to create positive change.
