Nature's Wisdom: Why Everyday Choices Matter

Learn how small choices can add up to make a big difference in the world. Discover the wisdom of nature and its relevance to our daily lives.

I’ve got a confession to make.

Last week, I really wanted to talk about the upcoming inauguration and my feelings about it.

But I didn’t think it was my place to write about politics. That’s not the point of 🌿Messages from Nature. And yet...

There are changes coming that will impact most of us, and some of us will be impacted deeply - and not kindly.

People often have a particular issue that moves them to vote one way or another. While there are many important issues, my vote has always come down to who will best protect the environment.

Because when our environment is destroyed, not much else will matter, will it?

I hear that we must “Save the Earth!” But the truth is that Earth will go on with or without us.

We must save ourselves.

Those small choices, those things that you do have control over, do matter. Choosing whole foods rather than highly processed foods can have an immediate impact on your health. All the better if you can find a local farmer to buy from.

Reducing single-use plastics, reusing what you can; you know the assignment, right?

Remember the🌿 Message about the gophers who transformed Mt. St. Helen’s in just a few hours?

The Earth is constantly cycling through degradation and regeneration. We’re such a blip in the time frame here; there could be other forms of life that we haven’t discovered yet!

What about magical mycelium?! Our knowledge is expanding, adding to the understanding that we are all connected.

Have you heard about the radiation-eating fungi found in Chernobyl?

A black fungus called Cladosporium sphaerospermum adapted to thrive in areas that would kill most life forms and can “feed” on radiation, using it as a source of energy, like plants use sunlight for photosynthesis.

Nature will find a way.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) believe that every decision should consider the impact on 7 generations into the future. Wouldn’t that change our worldview? - and the life expectancy of the human race.

Here’s a 3-minute tiny but mighty practice to try out next time you’re outdoors:

  • Stop and center yourself. Breathe consciously, sensing the air moving in and out. Get calm and notice your feet on the ground. Relax and let gravity release your tension into the Earth.

  • Let the awareness settle in that you are on a planet that has existed for billions of years. (These are the kind of billionaires I like!), and that you are hurtling through space while twirling around an axis.

  • The Sun is a STAR. Your very own personal starlight, beaming warmth and life to you. The moon reaches into your very being, too, moving you like the tides.

You are an integral part of a beautiful wholeness that supports you completely. Let that sink in. All of life is here for you.

Mindfulness, Self-Care, and Sustainability: The Interconnectedness of Well-Being

When we think about creating a more sustainable world, we often focus on big-picture solutions like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and reducing waste. But what about the role of personal well-being in sustainability? How do our individual choices and habits impact the planet, and vice versa?

The truth is that our personal well-being and the well-being of the planet are deeply interconnected. When we prioritize mindfulness and self-care, we become more aware of our thoughts, feelings, and actions. We're more likely to make choices that align with our values, including choices that benefit the environment.

So, how can we cultivate mindfulness and self-care in our daily lives? Here are a few tips:

  • Start small: Begin with short periods of mindfulness practice, such as 5-10 minute meditation sessions or deep breathing exercises.

  • Connect with nature: Spend time outdoors, whether it's walking in a park, hiking in the woods, or simply sitting in a garden or on a balcony with plants.

  • Prioritize self-care: Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, such as yoga, reading, or spending time with loved ones.

  • Practice gratitude: Reflect on the things you're thankful for each day, no matter how small they may seem.

By cultivating mindfulness and self-care, we can become more intentional, compassionate, and sustainable individuals. We can make choices that benefit not just ourselves but the planet and all its inhabitants.

Spirituality, Nature Connection, and Sustainability: A Reflection

For many of us, spirituality and nature connection are deeply intertwined. When we spend time in nature, we often feel a sense of awe, wonder, and connection to something greater than ourselves. This sense of connection can inspire and motivate us to take action on environmental issues.

But what does it mean to connect with nature in a spiritual way? For some, it may involve practicing outdoor rituals or ceremonies, such as full moon meditations or solstice celebrations. For others, it may involve simply spending time in nature, listening to its rhythms and wisdom.

Whatever form it takes, spiritual nature connection can have a profound impact on our relationship with the environment. When we feel a sense of reverence and respect for the natural world, we're more likely to want to protect and preserve it.

Here are a few ways to deepen your spiritual nature connection:

  • Spend time in nature with intention: Rather than just going for a walk or hike, take time to reflect on your intentions and what you hope to experience or learn.

  • Practice outdoor rituals or ceremonies: Explore different rituals or ceremonies that resonate with you, such as full moon meditations or solstice celebrations.

  • Listen to nature's wisdom: Take time to simply listen to the sounds of nature, whether it's the songs of birds, the rustling of leaves, or the gentle babbling of a brook.

By deepening our spiritual nature connection, we can cultivate a sense of reverence, respect, and reciprocity with the natural world. We can become more intentional, compassionate, and sustainable stewards of the earth.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some small choices you can make in your daily life to reduce your environmental impact, and how can you prioritize them?

  2. How do you currently prioritize mindfulness and self-care in your life, and what are some ways you can deepen your practice to benefit both yourself and the planet?

  3. What role do spirituality and nature connection play in your life, and how can you nurture these connections to inspire greater environmental stewardship?
