A Mother Earth’s Day ritual for grounding and nurturing
Step outside for just a moment today. Feel the ground beneath your feet. Notice the air on your skin, the light falling wherever it finds you.
Your body knows that is not nothing. Your nervous system knows that is everything.
Today is Mother's Day, and whether that word is music to your ears or carries a little weight for you, there is one mother who has never once let you down.
She's been here since before you were born, and she will be here long after. She holds you right now, whether you remember to notice her or not.
I'm talking about the Earth, about Mother Nature herself – this quiet, patient, endlessly generous mother who feeds you, breathes with you, and quite literally holds you up every single day.
She never asks you to be different than you are. And this week's reflection is a gentle invitation to let her actually mother you — maybe for the first time in a while.
Think about what a truly good mother does. She provides, she shelters, she creates the conditions for life to unfold. She doesn't panic when you struggle, but keeps offering warmth and ground and nourishment, trusting that you'll find your way.
That's exactly what Nature does. The soil softens to receive whatever falls. The trees bend with the wind and keep growing. Flowers bloom not to impress anyone, but simply because that is their nature. Birds share their song, and the afternoon light of May is pure gold.
And through all of it, the Earth just keeps turning, just keeps tending, just keeps offering herself.
And you don't have to earn any of it.
You are receiving simply because Nature decided you needed to be here now, too.
Here’s a 3-minute Tiny but Mighty Practice to help you be mothered by Nature:
Step outdoors (or even stop for a moment on your way to your car – that counts!). Plant both feet on the ground. Take three slow breaths, and with each exhale, let yourself soften just a little.
Focus on the center of your chest and allow it to soften. Sense Nature supporting you. Then say, quietly or just in your heart: "Thank you for holding me."
Notice what happens in your body. That's not just a nice thought – that's a real relationship. Mother Nature hears you!
However this day finds you, you are on the Earth right now. You are being held, tended, offered to. You are already home.
No matter your relationship with the term “mother,” we can ground into the energy of Mother and Mother Earth. This energy is loving and nurturing, the perfect energy for ushering in healing. This Mother’s Day, you are invited to spend as little or as much time as you like grounding into the energy of the day.
If you need a guide, you can use this format:
Journal Prompts: Let Nature Mother You
When did you last let yourself be fully held by anything or anyone? What did that feel like in your body?
What does a truly good mother mean to you? Where do you see those qualities showing up in the natural world around you?
Where in your life are you still trying to earn something that was always freely given?
If the Earth is always offering herself to you, what would it mean to actually receive that today?
Is there a place in Nature where you have always felt safe or at ease, even as a child? What did that place give you?
A Reiki-Inspired Ritual: Receiving the Mother
This ritual is best done outside, but if that isn't possible, sit near a window where you can see the sky or any living thing. Give yourself 10–15 quiet minutes, if you have it.
Ground yourself. Sit or stand with both feet flat on the earth or floor. Take three slow, intentional breaths, inhaling through your nose, exhaling through your mouth. With each exhale, imagine any tension, worry, or mental noise traveling down through your body, through the soles of your feet, and releasing into the ground beneath you. The Earth receives it without hesitation.
Open your hands. Rest your hands in your lap with your palms facing upward. This is a simple but powerful gesture of receiving; one used in Reiki and energy work to signal to your body and your energetic field that you are open and ready to receive healing. Notice any resistance to this posture. That resistance is worth getting curious about.
Invite the energy in. Visualize a warm, golden-green light—the color of May sunlight through new leaves—gathering just above the crown of your head. This is the Earth's energy, rising up to meet you. With each inhale, allow that light to move slowly down through your body: through your head, your throat, your heart, your belly, your hips, all the way down through your legs and into the ground. You are not pulling it; you are simply allowing it to flow, the way warmth finds you when you step into the sun.
Place your hands on your heart. Hold them there gently, one on top of the other. Feel the warmth of your own hands… that is also healing energy. Breathe here for a few moments and repeat silently or aloud: I am held. I am nourished. I don't have to earn this. Let the words be less an affirmation and more a remembering.
Offer gratitude and close. When you feel ready, take one final deep breath and, as you exhale, send a quiet thank you downward into the ground, into the roots, into the Earth herself. You might imagine that gratitude as a soft light traveling from your heart down into the soil. Then, gently shake out your hands, wiggle your fingers and toes, and take a moment before you return to your day to bask in the Reiki energy.
Here’s a simple practice to carry into your week:
Each morning this week, before you reach for your phone, step outside for just two minutes (if you’re able) or stand at an open window.
Feel the air on your skin, look at something living, and place one hand on your heart and one hand pointing toward the earth, and simply say, I receive.
That’s it. Just two minutes, every morning, and notice what shifts by the end of the week.
