Discover the transformative energy you hold and learn how to unlock your inner healing power. Find peace, balance and wellness by tapping into the magic within

Ever wish you had a magic wand?

Spoiler: You actually do!!

I think fairy tales have lasted so long because they hold little truths about us, and one of those truths is that we all have the power to heal.

Many years ago, long before I ever imagined becoming a “healer,” I went to a conference in Washington, D.C., called Healing in Our Time.

I signed up for a workshop on Therapeutic Touch, led by Dr. Delores Kreiger, a nurse and pioneer who taught healing touch at NYU Hospital. She showed us how to sense and work with the energy field - an entirely new and exciting idea for me.

She patiently demonstrated how to feel energy in our hands, then hold them a few inches from someone’s head and notice any sensations.

I felt… nothing.

Oh well. I went to my next session, a meditation with Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. I didn’t know much about meditation, but I followed his instructions to breathe and tune in to my heart.

And then, suddenly, tears began rolling down my cheeks. I wasn’t sad, just deeply relaxed and open. It felt like my tears were watering my soul.

Something nudged me to try sensing energy again. I lifted my hands the way Dr. Kreiger had shown us.

This time, clear as day, I could feel the energy…warmth, pressure, tingling. And at that moment, I was hooked.

I wasn’t special or gifted. I was simply open and willing to learn.

Not long after, my sister Alice scratched her cornea when her toddler accidentally poked her eye. Her doctor said it would take a week to heal, and she should wear an eye patch until her follow-up.

I offered to help using what I’d just learned:

I placed my hands on either side of her head, sensed the energy, and offered the opposite sensation, cool to heat, warmth to cold, smooth to sharp.

Two days later, her doctor was stunned. There was no visible sign of the tear. Alice was released from treatment, completely healed, and thrilled to be fine!

Here’s the truth: we all have the ability to support our own healing and each other’s.

In the meantime, here’s a 3-minute, tiny but mighty practice to try:

  • Ground and center yourself. Take a few relaxing breaths. Let your imagination open.

  • Hold your hands up as though you were going to say a prayer, but don’t let them touch. Focusing on the sensations in your palms, slowly move your hands apart and back together again. You may sense pressure, warmth, tingling, magnetism or taffy between your hands.

  • It’s your energy field! Stretch it and play around with it! Take one finger and “draw” on the other hand. Enjoy the sensations!

That’s your energy field! It’s natural, real, and always with you.

I’m on a mission to demystify healing and remind you that the power is already in your hands. You can do this!

Discovering Your Inner Healing Power

Discovering your inner healing power involves connecting with your inner self and tapping into your innate healing abilities. Healing abilities are not for a select few special people. We are all born healers; we just have to find our inner healing power. It’s up to us to unlock the magic we hold within.

And we don’t just hold the ability to support our own healing (although that is a really fantastic part), but we also hold the ability to support others' healing. It’s such a beautiful thing when we realize that the gifts we hold can be used to support others.

Even cooler, energy healing can also be used to help heal animals and even situations (you learn this in my Reiki II class).

Here are some steps to help you discover your inner healing power:

  1. Meditation: Use meditation to quiet your mind and connect with your inner self. Meditation can be a powerful tool for diving into and connecting with your inner self. Many of us go about our day-to-day with our minds full of stress. What am I going to make for dinner? Did I sign that permission slip? Do I have anything at the dry cleaners? Did I turn off my computer before I left the office? Meditation is a great way to tame the thoughts long enough to bring your cortisol levels down and to start being open to the flow of energy that wants to run through you. See my story above!

  2. Intention-setting: Setting intentions can be a powerful way for you to connect with God, the universe, source (whatever your preferred term is) and let it know what you are calling in. Sometimes we can’t feel our inner healing power or the flow of energy simply because we actually don’t know what we want. Sit down in a quiet space, and make your intention known.

  3. Listening to your body: Pay attention to your body's intuition and listen to its wisdom. Your body actually holds a lot of the answers to the questions you have, but many of us don’t listen to our bodies to be able to receive the answers. The more you listen to your body, the more information you are likely to get from it. This is a great way to get to know yourself on a deeper level and to discover your inner healing power. All you have to do is find it.

  4. Trusting your instincts: Trust your instincts and have faith in your inner healing power. I know this is easier said than done. There are a lot of reasons that people lose trust in their own instincts. However, your intuition won’t steer you wrong. What steers you wrong is actually your conscious mind. When you know yourself so well, your instinct acts as the main character in your story. Trust your instincts through this process in order to uncover the magic you hold and discover your inner healing power.

Energy Healing for Self-Care

Energy healing can be a powerful tool for self-care, helping to manage stress, promote relaxation and enhance overall well-being. Your ability to heal yourself (and others when appropriate) is a critical tool in taking care of your emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Self-care is not always bubble baths and pedicures (of course, if you enjoy those things, there’s nothing wrong with doing them). Self-care is truly about caring for yourself in a way that no one else can. When you are engaging in effective and supportive self-care, your ability to discover your inner healing power is amplified. It really is important to engage in self-care activities if you are hoping to become an energy healer.

Here are some ways to incorporate energy healing into your self-care routine:

Managing Stress
  1. Energy clearing: Use techniques such as smudging or sound healing to clear your energy and promote relaxation. You want to ensure your space is full of positive energy and not the heaviness of negative energy. I suggest doing this before any kind of session.

  2. Grounding: Use grounding techniques such as deep breathing or walking barefoot to connect with the earth and calm your energy. Grounding activities in nature are the best way to connect with yourself and unlock your inner healing power. Get your energy settled and balanced by engaging in grounding regularly.

  3. Self-healing: Use energy healing techniques such as hand positions or meditation to promote relaxation and reduce stress. See the section below for some suggestions.

Promoting Relaxation
  1. Energy balancing: Use techniques such as Reiki or qigong to balance your energy and promote relaxation. Your body can’t relax fully if your energy is out of whack. Take some time to regularly engage in self-care that balances your energy to help unlock your inner healing power.

  2. Calming visualizations: Use visualizations such as imagining a peaceful landscape or a calming color to promote relaxation. In my Reiki classes, I run my students through visualizations to help them connect with their inner healing power and to guide them to feel the flow of Reiki energy. There are visualizations that can help you through all kinds of scenarios. I highly recommend finding a practitioner or an app that you like and regularly doing visualizations.

  3. Soothing sounds: Use soothing sounds such as nature sounds or calming music to promote relaxation. If you can, go out in nature for the real-deal of nature sounds. If you’re feeling unwell or unbalanced, going for a hike and just listening to the sounds of nature can be a great way to relax and de-stress. If this isn’t an option or you need something quicker, you can always find artificial nature sounds or other soothing sounds on apps, YouTube, or directly through a practitioner.

Simple Techniques for Energy Healing

Once you establish a basis for your own energy and healing work, you can take things to the next step by doing some simple energy healing techniques on yourself. You are your own best test subject or practice dummy. So, if you’re hoping to discover your inner healing power and perform energy healing, start by practicing on yourself.

Here are some simple techniques for energy healing:

Hand Positions
  1. Prayer-like position: Place your hands together in a prayer-like position, with your fingers touching and your thumbs crossed. This can help to balance your energy and calm your mind.

  2. Heart-centered position: Place one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. This can help to connect your heart and solar plexus energies, promoting feelings of love and compassion.

  3. Hands-over-eyes position: Place your palms (fingers facing up) over your eyes. This can help relieve stress and tension and quiet your mind.

  4. Healing touch: Place your hands on or near the area of the body that needs healing. This can help to channel healing energy and promote relaxation.

Meditation Exercises
  1. Breathwork: Focus on your breath, inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly. This can help to calm your mind and balance your energy.

  2. Body Scan: Imagine a bright, healing light filling your body. Have it start at your crown chakra at the top of your head and slowly work its way down to the tips of your toes. Allow it to warm every part of you on its way down. This can help to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

  3. Walking Meditation: Try doing your own or turning on a guided walking meditation. Go for a walk, in nature if possible, and follow the prompts.  This can help to focus your mind and calm your body.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways I've experienced my inner healing power in the past, and how can I tap into it more consistently?

  2. What are some areas of my life where I'd like to cultivate more healing and balance, and how can I use my inner healing power to support myself?

  3. What self-care practices can I incorporate into my daily routine to nurture my inner healing power and promote overall well-being?
